Hi there! I am working on a piece for Zagat about latte art. Wondering if there is a barista in your company that makes awesome latte art and if you have any photos of it? Would love to feature the photo, the name of the artist, you guys, naturally, and get a quote from the artist about how long it took to learn to make latte art, and what he/she likes about it.

Let me know if you have anyone in mind! My deadline is Friday, 3pm.

Best,

Linnea

Linnea,

Thanks for your letter and interest!

As it happens, I won the World Latte Art Championship a couple years ago. Here’s an example of the design I poured for that contest:

I’m happy to send you examples of other designs and variations if you like. Learning to pour latte art well is surprisingly difficult, and I’m still improving. I have probably practiced for a career total of 15,000 hours, with much of that time spent training my staff and others’.

The principles of latte art are fluidity and resistance; control of each makes complex designs like the one above simple to draw. However many variables, from the quality of foam to the timing of the pouring sequence, ultimately determine one’s control of the principles. It takes many dedicated hours to understand each variable at the level of reflex and to apply that understanding while making cheerful conversation over the bar.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you’d like anything else from me,

Adam
